Longest driving day
The most common planning mistake on a United States trip is underestimating distance. Two places that look adjacent on a national map can be a full day apart, and a route that reads as a gentle loop on screen frequently means six hours of driving on four of its seven days. Add the driving legs honestly and let the totals above tell you whether the plan is a holiday or a haul.

Driving

Mapping apps give the time a car takes at speed with no stops. Real travel days include fuel, food, photographs, and the twenty minutes lost every time somebody wants to look at something. This estimator applies the correction that mapping apps do not.

The lines people forget
Sales tax is added at the till rather than shown on the shelf, and it varies by state and sometimes by city, so a budget built from displayed prices runs short. Hotel taxes and resort fees are frequently charged on top of the rate you booked. Tipping is expected in restaurants, bars, and for many services, and it is a real percentage of the food budget rather than a rounding error. One-way car rental fees can exceed the rental itself on a long drop. Build all four into the plan and the final total stops being a surprise.

Prep

Grouped by when it matters, with a line on why each item earns its place. Tick as you go and the list remembers, so next trip starts from what worked rather than from memory.

Entry requirements, park reservation systems, and seasonal road closures all change, and several of them change without much notice. Everything here is chosen to be broadly sensible, but check the official source for your nationality, your parks, and your dates rather than relying on any guide including this one.
