Marxism study notes

A concept explorer for Marx and the tradition that followed him. Every idea comes with where it is set out, what it is usually taken to mean and why that reading is thin, and the strongest objection its critics have raised. Build a citation-linked reading list and attach your own notes to any concept or text. Everything stays on your device.

Concepts

Each entry gives the claim as its proponents state it, where it is set out, the reading students most often give, and the strongest objection raised against it. Tap a card to open the full entry and attach a note.

Debates

Ten questions on which serious people disagree, with the case each side makes set out in its own terms. These are the questions examiners set, because they are the ones that are actually open.

Each debate below states the strongest version of both positions rather than arguing for either. That is deliberate. An essay that can state the opposing case accurately before answering it is doing the thing the higher bands reward, and a page that only presents one side cannot teach you to do it.

Texts

What each work is, when it was written, what state it was in when Marx left it, and a realistic route through it. Editorial history matters here more than in most fields, because several of the central texts were assembled after his death.

Essay method

Nine moves for writing about Marx, and the failure each one prevents. Most marks are lost on the same handful of errors.

Extending this

Everything here renders from five arrays. Adding a concept, a debate, a text, a thinker or a method entry is appending one object, and no application code changes.
