Threats

Twelve opponent types, described by what they do rather than by who they are, so the profiles work against any team. Each gives the danger, how to contain it, and the cost of containing it, because every containment decision opens something else.

The most common planning error is treating containment as free. Doubling a wide threat pulls a midfielder across and opens the space they were occupying. Dropping deep against a runner in behind concedes the territory a press would have denied. Write the cost down next to every decision, because the cost is what the opponent will attack.

Approach

Six ways to set up against a stronger, equal, or weaker side. Each states what it asks of your players, what it gives up, and the conditions under which it stops working.

Choose the approach your squad can actually execute for ninety minutes rather than the one that beats the opponent on paper. A high press held by a team without the fitness to sustain it becomes a badly organised medium block after an hour, which is worse than starting there deliberately.

Shape

Pick a starting shape and see it laid out, along with what it gives you and what it structurally concedes. No shape is neutral, and knowing which spaces yours leaves open is more useful than knowing what it covers.

Set pieces

The part of the game a coach can genuinely install in a week, and the part most often left to habit. Work through both halves and tick what you have actually organised rather than what you assume everyone knows.
