Scene navigator

Fifteen sequences in the order the film presents them, which is not the order the events happened in. Each entry gives what occurs, who is narrating it, the techniques worth watching for, and the question the sequence is built to raise. Open one before a rewatch and you will notice things you have looked at without seeing.

Positions are given as a rough share of the running time rather than as timecodes, because different releases carry different front matter and a timecode from one edition will not match another. When you cite a moment in an essay, name the release you watched alongside the timecode so a reader can find it.

Techniques

Twelve techniques the film is known for, each with what it is, what it achieves here specifically, and where to look for a clear example. Almost none of these were invented for this film, and the interesting claim is about how systematically they were combined rather than about who did them first.

The strongest essays on this film resist the temptation to list techniques. Naming deep focus proves you recognised it. Explaining what a shot holding two planes in focus does to the viewer's freedom to choose where to look, and why that matters in a film about competing accounts of one man, is the analysis the marks are actually for.

Narrators

The film's structure is its argument. Five people account for the same life and none of them was present for all of it. Work out what each was positioned to know, what each has reason to shade, and where two accounts cover the same ground differently, and the film stops being a biography and becomes a problem about evidence.

The gap nobody fills
No narrator was in the room at the moment the film opens with. The reporter never learns what the audience is shown at the end, and the audience is given an answer that explains nothing about the man. The structure withholds the meaning of the object from every person inside the story and hands it to the viewer alone, which is why an essay treating the ending as a solution usually misses what the film is doing with it.

Annotate

Log shots as you watch. Record the timecode, the sequence, what the camera is doing, and what you noticed. Twenty entries across the film will show you a pattern you could never have held in your head.
